Realigning a route by selecting an existing route from another network
With Esri Roads and Highways, you can realign a route based on a selection of all or a portion of an existing route in another network. This allows you to realign routes in different networks and LRMs but share the same centerline.
Sharing the centerline is important not only for data management but also for the ability to correctly calculate true miles.
- Realign the initial route.
- Add the layer you want to use for your source geometry. See Using the Select Source Geometry tool for more information about selecting source geometry.
- Zoom to the location where you want to create your new route.
- Set your target LRS Network layer.Note:
The target LRS Network must be different from the network selected in step 1.
- Choose Realign Route on the Roads And Highways Editing toolbar.
- Click the Select Route Portion tool .
The Select route or portion of a route dialog box appears. By default, the tool is in selection mode.
- Click or draw a bounding box to select an existing route.
The parameters on the Select route or portion of a route dialog box are populated with information from the existing route, including temporal view date, route ID, from measure, and to measure.
The From and To measures are taken from the existing route. The From and To measures are the length of the existing route and the whole route is selected.
- Optionally modify the From Measure using one of the following:
- Manually enter a new From measure in the text box.
- Click the Select From Measure tool and click the map at the location of the from measure.
- Optionally modify the To Measure using one of the following:
- Manually enter a new To measure in the text box.
- Click the Select To Measure tool and click the map at the location of the from measure.
- Click OK.
- Click the Apply button .
The Realign Route dialog box appears.
The Realign Route dialog box will be automatically populated with information from your redline if you used one.
- Verify or type the effective date, route ID, from measure, and to measure to complete the form.
- Define the From Measure. There are many ways to define the From Measure as outlined below:
Redline
If a redline is selected, the From Measure that is displayed is pulled from the From measure column in the redline attributes.
Note:If you select both a redline and one or more source geometry features, the redline attributes take precedent and is input as the From Measure.
If the redline feature does not have a From measure column or the field is NULL, the From measure is auto-populated as 0.
You can change the method by which the From Measure is calculated using suggested measures. Alternatively, you can reset your selection and select only the source geometry to pull the From Measure from the source geometry length.
Source geometry
If no redline is selected and one or more source geometry features are selected, the From measure that is displayed is pulled from the source geometry attributes.
Note:If a redline and a source geometry is selected, the From Measure is pulled from the redline attributes.
You can change the method by which the From Measure is calculated using spatial selection or suggested measures.
Suggested measures
If you do not know the From Measure, you can let Roads and Highways suggest the From Measure. The Calculate tool returns the From Measure by calculating the source geometry length minus (-) the To Measure.
- Optionally enter a To Measure.
- Next to the From Measure, click Calculate .
When you hover the pointer over the From Measure field, text appears at the bottom of the dialog box to let you know how the From Measure was calculated.
- Define the To Measure. There are many ways to define the To Measure as outlined below:

If a redline is selected, the To Measure that is displayed is pulled from the To measure column in the redline attributes.
Note:If you select both a redline and one or more source geometry features, the redline attributes take precedent and is input as the From Measure.
If the redline feature does not have a From measure column or the field is NULL, the From measure is auto-populated as 0.

Suggested measures
If you do not know the To Measure, you can let Roads and Highways suggest the To Measure. The Calculate tool returns the To Measure by calculating the source geometry length plus (+) the From Measure.
- Optionally enter a From Measure.
- Next to the To Measure, click Calculate .
When you hover the pointer over the To Measure field, text appears at the bottom of the dialog box to let you know how the To Measure was calculated.
- Enter the split From Measure:
- Manually enter a From Measure.
- Click the Select From Measure tool and click the map at the location of the From measure.
- Enter the split To Measure:
- Manually enter a To Measure.
- Click the Select From Measure tool and click the map at the location of the To measure.
- Click OK.
The route is realigned using the network from an existing route.
