Replacing feature class aliases

Databases generated using the SDSFIE Geodatabase Builder toolset can optionally include feature class aliases based on the SDSFIE short 8-character name as opposed to the SDSFIE long 28-character name. This can create problems when using the data in ArcMap, since the feature class alias is used by default as the name of the layer displayed in the ArcMap Table of Contents window. For example, if the feature class name is canopy_pavilion_area and the alias is bggencan, the layer is listed as bggencan when it is added to the ArcMap table of contents.

The SDSFIE Alias Remover replaces the existing alias with the feature class name so it is easier to work with the data in ArcMap. The aliases are replaced for all the feature classes in each feature dataset in the database.

Steps:
  1. Start ArcCatalog.
  2. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Defense Mapping.
  3. Choose the database that contains the aliases you want to change in the Catalog tree.
  4. On the Defense Mapping toolbar, click Defense Mapping > SDSFIE Tools > SDSFIE Alias Remover.

The aliases for all the feature classes are replaced in the database. A message appears when all the alias names have been replaced with the feature class names.

  5. Click OK.
