Moving a point event

Events such as signposts and crashes are represented as points associated with route features. The Move Point Event tool allows you to choose a point event feature in the map and move it along its respective route feature. With events, the point in the map is actually a table record, so the value in the point measure field is updated when it is moved.

For instance, suppose there is a speed limit sign that is going to be moved on a street. To move the sign, you can start an edit session, then click the Move Point Event tool and select the point event you want to move. As the pointer is moved along the route, a MapTip shows the current m-value, which allows you to know what the point's m-value is going to be after it is moved.

To use this tool, the event features and associated route features must be rendered in the map.

Steps:
  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. Load the event layer and associated routes in the table of contents.
    NoteNote:

When working with joins and event layers, make sure you add the event layer before you perform the join to ensure that edits to the event layer are performed correctly. If you join the event table before adding it as an event layer, you cannot update the attributes of the event while editing, and some of the event editing may not work.

  3. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Production Editing.
  4. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Production Linear Referencing.
  5. Click the Production Start Editing button Production Start Editing on the Production Editing toolbar.
    NoteNote:

The Manage Features and Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes windows automatically appear when you start an edit session using the Production Start Editing tool.

    TipTip:

If the Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes window does not appear when you start an edit session, click the Show/Hide Attributes button Show/Hide Attributes on the Manage Features window.

  6. Click the Move Point Event tool Move Point Event Tool on the Production Linear Referencing toolbar.
  7. Click the Select Route Events tool Select Route Events Tool on the Production Linear Referencing toolbar.
  8. Select a point event in the map.

The pointer changes to a hollow square. A MapTip appears next to the pointer and displays the current measure value along the route.

    NoteNote:

If the event layer is displayed with an offset, the vertex snaps to the route while the event is being modified.

  9. Drag the pointer to where you want the point to be moved on the route.

The value in the measure field is updated, and the point is drawn in the new location.
