Populating the z-value with a surface
The z-values for features can be populated using a raster file to interpolate the appropriate values. The Populate Z For Selected Features tool allows you to specify the raster file from which you want to interpret the z-values.
3D Analyst must be installed to populate z-values using a surface.
- Start ArcMap.
- Verify that 3D Analyst is installed and the extension is enabled.
- If necessary, load data in the map.
- On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Production Editing.
- On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Production Z Management.

Click the Production Start Editing button on the Production Editing toolbar.
Note:
The Manage Features and Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes windows automatically appear when you start an edit session using the Production Start Editing tool.
Tip:If the Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes window does not appear when you start an edit session, click the Show/Hide Attributes button on the Manage Features window.
- Select the features whose z-values you want to populate using the Edit tool on the Production Editing toolbar.

Click the Populate Z For Selected Feature(s) button on the Production Z Management toolbar.
The Z Populate dialog box appears.

Choose the Populate Zs from surface option.

Do one of the following to choose a raster to use for z-value population:
To use a raster that is currently loaded in the map
Click the Populate Zs from surface drop-down arrow and choose the raster to use.
To use a raster that is not loaded in the map
Click the Populate Zs from surface drop-down arrow and choose Browse. Navigate to the raster you want to use in the Select Surface dialog box, then click Add.

Click OK.
A message appears that indicates how many features were populated using the Populate Z For Selected Features tool.

Click OK.
Tip:
You can view the updated z-value in the Sketch Properties window.
