Importing VPF data into an existing SDE geodatabase

The Convert VPF to Geodatabase tool allows you to import Vector Product Format (VPF) data into an existing ArcSDE geodatabase. Sources that can be imported using this tool include Digital Nautical Chart (DNC), Vector Map (VMap 0, VMap 1, and VMap 2), Urban Vector Map (UVMap), Foundation Feature Data (FFD), and Vector Interim Terrain Data (VITD). When VPF data is imported, there are several steps that must be followed:

Steps:
  1. Start ArcCatalog.
  2. Add the Convert VPF to Geodatabase tool by doing the following:
    1. On the main menu, click Customize > Customize Mode.

      The Customize dialog box appears.

    2. Click the Commands tab.
    3. In the Categories list, click Production Import Export.
    4. Click and drag the Convert VPF to Geodatabase button Convert VPF Data to Geodatabase to a toolbar.
    5. Click Close.

  4. Choose a product in the Product Type area.

If Digital Nautical Chart (DNC) is chosen, you must then choose the type of scale within which the VPF data exists. The four options are Approach, Coastal, General, and Harbor.

  5. If you want to import notes/RAT, choose Yes in the Import Notes/RAT area.
    NoteNote:

Currently, DNC enterprise geodatabases cannot support multiple single files with identical file names in a single enterprise geodatabase. For example, if you import Library A, with dqy.notes.rat, those notes will be overwritten upon importing Library B with the dqy.notes.rat file from Library B. The vector data management will be successful, but you must manage the notes in another location.

  6. Leave the Create Geodatabase On Import option set to No.
  7. Click Next.

The Navigate to VPF Data dialog box appears.
