Navigating Data Driven Pages

Data Driven Pages give you the ability to generate a set of output pages by taking a single layout and iterating over a set of map extents. The extents are defined by the features in a layer and are sometimes called tiles, sections, or areas of interest (AOI). The layer that defines the extents is referred to as an index layer. Any feature layer may serve as the index layer.

Using the Data Driven Pages toolbar, you can navigate through your pages or go directly to the page you are interested in. The toolbar contains four buttons to navigate the pages.

NoteNote:

Clicking the Previous Page Previous Page button takes you to the page previous to the one you are on. It is important to note that this button does NOT take you to the previous page viewed. It takes you to the page immediately preceding the page you are currently viewing.

Another way to navigate through Data Driven Pages is to go directly to the specific page you are interested in. Use the text box on the toolbar to do this. This text box displays either the page name or the page index of the current page being viewed.

Page name comes from the name field you specify on the Data Driven Pages Setup dialog box. Page index is determined by the Data Driven Pages sorting logic, as defined by the sort field on the Data Driven Pages Setup dialog box. The page index is not the same as the page number, though in many cases they may share the same number. The index always starts with 1 and ends with the number of pages created. This is not necessarily the same as the page number. Page numbers may start with a value greater than 1. You may want the first map (like the first Data Driven Page) of a multipage document to start on page 4, in which case you would specify that the starting page number for this Data Driven Page series start with 4. The index would still start with 1.

Click the drop-down menu to choose between Show Name to display the page's name or Show Page, which will show the page's index within the series, that is, 3 of 17.

You can also use this text box to navigate to a specific page by typing in the page name or index you want to see.
