An overview of the Functional Surface toolset
The following table lists the tools in the Functional Surface toolset and a brief description of each.
Tool |
Description |
|---|---|
Interpolates surface elevation properties for point, multipoint, and polyline features. |
Interpolates z-values for a feature class based on elevation derived from a raster, triangulated irregular network (TIN), or terrain dataset. |
This tool uses an input 2D or 3D polyline feature class along with a raster, triangulated irregular network (TIN), or terrain dataset surface to determine visibility between observer and target points. A multipatch feature class can optionally be supplied to participate in the visibility analysis. |
Calculates the area and volume of a raster, triangulated irregular network (TIN), or terrain dataset surface above or below a given reference plane. |
The following tools that were available in the ArcGIS 3D Analyst toolbox prior to version 10.0 have been removed, since they have been replaced by the more capable Add Z Information geoprocessing tool.

Recommendation |
|---|---|
Surface Length |
Use the Add Z Information tool to calculate the surface length of each line input line feature based on a surface. |
Surface Spot |
Use the Add Z Information tool to add surface values for each point of a point feature class based on a surface. |
