Adding data from ArcGIS Online

In addition to basemaps from ArcGIS Online, you can add other data from the Web for use in ArcGlobe. From the Web page that is launched from the command in step 2, a Search function is provided to help you look for the data you are interested in. This includes layer packages, map services, globe services, image services, and so on.

To ensure your data is added to ArcGlobe, you must make sure ArcMap is not open. If neither application is open when you click the data you want to add, ArcMap will start automatically and the data will be added to ArcMap by default.

To find additional data for use in ArcGlobe from ArcGIS Online, do the following:

Steps:
  1. Exit ArcMap (if it is open), otherwise the layer will be sent to ArcMap instead of ArcGlobe.
  2. This ensures ArcGlobe is the only open application.
  3. Open ArcGIS Online by doing either one of the following:
    • Click File > Add Data > Add Data From ArcGIS Online from within ArcGlobe.
  4. Type your search term in the Search control and click Search All Content.
  5. You can also search for groups that contain content or browse these groups on the Web site.
  6. Click Open > Open in ArcGIS Desktop next to the data you want to add to ArcGlobe.
  7. The data is immediately added to your globe.
TipTip:
  • Downloadable data on the site is in the form of layer packages and requires version 9.3.1 or later to open.
  • If you sign in to the site, you'll also be able to access private data in groups you are a member of.
