Partially invalidating a disk cache

This option allows you to delete the layer's data cache for a specified extent only. The deleted cache tiles are repopulated using on-demand caching. That is, they are calculated only when the area is revisited in ArcGlobe.

An example of why you would use this functionality is if a portion of your data has been updated and you have a full or partial cache for the layer. When your data is updated, the disk cache for that layer also needs to be updated. By invalidating just the affected area, you can keep the bulk of your cache intact and allow the updated portion to be regenerated as needed.

Steps:
  1. In the table of contents, right-click the layer to cache and click Properties.
  2. Click the Cache tab.
  3. Click the Advanced button.
  4. Enter the geographic extent to invalidate.
  5. These coordinates should be populated in Geographic Coordinate System (decimal degrees). This may not be the same units as the data source. As a result, if the data source referenced by this layer has a projected Coordinate System, the invalidation extent values you provide should be projected back to Geographic.
The default values are the full extent of the layer.
You can reset these values on the dialog box by clicking the Reset button.
  6. Click Invalidate Cache.

The cache tiles within the extent are deleted and will be repopulated using on-demand caching.

TipTip:
  • The partial cache invalidation may take a while to complete, depending on the volume of cache data to be deleted.
  • You can repopulate the invalidated cache using the Generate Data Cache command on the layer's context menu. Make sure you uncheck the Overwrite existing cache tiles option to keep your currently populated cache.
