Raster catalogs in the 8.x schema will appear as tables when viewed in 9.x. The difference between the 8.x and 9.x geodatabase raster catalog is that the ArcGIS 9.x schema contains a geometry column, which stores a footprint of the raster. The raster catalog in the 8.x schema does not have this footprint (geometry column). By registering the 8.x raster catalog with the geodatabase, an OID field and geometry field are added to the schema and the table is registered as a 9.x geodatabase raster catalog.

Raster catalogs created using SDERASTER, SQL ST_RASTER, or SQL SDO_GEO_RASTER will also be created as tables. To manage these as raster catalogs in the geodatabase, they need to be registered with the geodatabase. This will create object IDs and footprints for the rasters within the raster catalog.

Steps:
  1. In ArcCatalog or the Catalog window, expand Database Connections in the Catalog tree and double-click the database connection to which you want to connect.

If you need to make a new connection, see Creating spatial database connections.

  2. Right-click the raster catalog that needs to be upgraded and click Register with Geodatabase.

You may need to click Yes on the warning message to create object IDs and footprints.
