Creating an elevation image service using the wizard

LegacyLegacy:

ArcGIS 10 is the last release of the stand-alone ArcGIS Image Server product. The image service definition (.ISDef) has been replaced by an improved geodatabase data model—the mosaic dataset—which can be published as an image service using the ArcGIS Server Image extension.

Steps:
  1. Click the Image Service drop-down menu on the Image Service Definition Editor toolbar and click New Image Service.

The New Image Service Wizard welcome panel is displayed.

  2. Click Next.
  3. Click the New image service location browse button Browse and navigate to the location where you want to create the image service definition. Type the name in the File name text box and click Save.
  4. Click the Select spatial reference system browse button Browse and choose a spatial reference system provided in the ArcGIS Coordinate Systems folder.

This is the spatial reference system used for the image service and is not necessarily the same as that of each raster dataset that will be added. The spatial reference should be selected such that no coordinate system boundaries exist within the extents of the required image service definition.

  5. Click Select.
  6. Navigate to and choose a projected or geographic coordinate system.
  7. Click OK to close the Spatial Reference Properties dialog box.
  8. Click the Service type arrow and click Elevation.
  9. Click the Visualization method arrow, choose a method, then fill in the remaining parameters; otherwise, click the As an elevation image service button.

Choosing Elevation coded or Shaded relief as the visualization method and clicking Next opens the symbolization panel.

  10. Click the Generated on-the-fly arrow and choose a method, or click Load from symbology file and click the browse button to choose the file.
  11. Depending on the parameters you chose in the last two panels, you can edit some or all of the parameters listed in the Properties group.
  12. Optionally, click the Low color box and choose a new color.
  13. Optionally, click the High color box and choose a new color.
  14. Optionally, type a number in the Number of entries text box.
  15. Optionally, click the arrows to choose the Break classes at value.
  16. Optionally, uncheck Smooth gradient.
  17. Click Next.
  18. Click the Select a raster type browse button to open the Select Raster Type dialog box. Choose a raster type and click OK.
  19. Click either the File or Folder button, depending on whether you are adding a single file or a folder containing many files.
  20. Click the Select the input browse button and choose the file or folders containing the raster data.
  21. Optionally, check Use this spatial reference for all input data to use the spatial reference you define and click the button to choose the desired spatial reference system.

If unchecked, the spatial reference system defined with the raster is used.

  22. Optionally, click Yes if you want to add additional data to your image service definition and click Next. This takes you back through the steps you have already completed to define additional data and any enhancements.
  23. Optionally, uncheck Generate overviews if you do not want to optimize the image service definition.
  24. Optionally, uncheck Compile the service for publishing if you do not want to compile the image service definition.
  25. Click Next.
  26. Type a valid value in the Service name text box.

It is recommended that you enter all the information on this section of the wizard.

  27. Click Next.
  28. Review the summary.
  29. Click Back if you need to make changes; otherwise, click Finish.
