Exercise 8: Adding steps for digitizing a new driveway

Complexity: Beginner Data Requirement: Installed with software Data Path: \Program Files\ESRI\Task Assistant Manager\Data\Getting Started Goal: Learn how to configure steps and use the Copy Step and Paste Step functionality.

In this exercise, you will continue to configure steps. You will also use the Copy Step and Paste Step functionality. At the completion of this exercise, your Task Assistant window will appear as follows:

NoteNote:

Highlight the last item on the list in the Task Assistant window to make sure the next step you create is added below the previous ones.

Add the Digitize New Driveway step

In this part of the exercise, you will add the Digitize New Driveway step.

Steps:
  1. Click the New Step button New Step on the Task Assistant toolbar.

    A new step appears in the Task Assistant window.

  2. Click to highlight the new step.
  3. Use the step management tools to promote or demote (move up or move down) the new step in the Task Assistant window if it is not added at the correct level.
  4. Click the Designer tab.
  5. Click the cell next to Description and type Digitize New Driveway.
  6. Click the cell next to Name, double-click the existing step, then type Digitize New Driveway.
  7. Press the ENTER key.

Create the Snapping step

In this part of the exercise, you will create the Snapping step.

Steps:
  1. Click the New Step button New Step on the Task Assistant toolbar.

    A new step appears in the Task Assistant window.

  2. Click to highlight the new step.
  3. If necessary, click the Demote Step button Demote Step on the Task Assistant window to place the step at the correct level.
  4. Click the Designer tab.
  5. Click the cell next to Description and type Set Snapping to Edge, Vertex, and End.
  6. Click the cell next to Name, double-click the existing text, then type Set Snapping.
  7. Click the cell next to Snapping and click the ellipsis button (...) that appears.

    The Snapping Item Editor dialog box appears.

  8. Click the cell next to Edge Snapping.
  9. Click the arrow that appears and choose On.
  10. Click the cell next to End Snapping.
  11. Click the arrow that appears and choose On.
  12. Click the cell next to Vertex Snapping.
  13. Click the arrow that appears and choose On.
  14. Click OK to close the dialog box.

Create the Digitize New Street step

In this part of the exercise, you will create the Digitize New Street step.

Steps:
  1. Click the New Step button New Step on the Task Assistant toolbar.

    A new step appears in the Task Assistant window.

  2. Click to highlight the new step.
  3. If necessary, click the Demote Step button Demote Step on the Task Assistant window to place the step at the correct level.
  4. Click the Designer tab.
  5. Click the cell next to Description and type Digitize New Street.
  6. Click the cell next to Name, double-click the existing text, then type Digitize New Street.
  7. Click the cell next to Feature Template and click the ellipsis button (...) that appears.
  8. Choose Streets from the Templates list.
  9. Select Line from the list of construction tools.

    This establishes the step to create new lines in the Streets layer.

  10. Click OK on the Feature Template Item Editor dialog box.
  11. Click the cell next to Node Style and click the ellipsis button (...) that appears.

    The Node Style Item Editor dialog box appears.

  12. Click the Select a Style arrow and choose the Sketch Tool node style.

    This is the style that was created earlier in Exercise 7: Adding steps for digitizing a new house.

  13. Click OK.

Create the Update Attributes step

In this part of the exercise, you will create the Update Attributes step.

Steps:
  1. Select the Update Attributes step that was created in exercise 7.
    NoteNote:

    Make sure that the Execute Steps check box on the Properties tab is unchecked.

  2. Click the Copy Step button Copy Step.
  3. Select the Digitize New Street step created in this exercise.
  4. Click the Paste Step button Paste Step.

    A new Update Attributes step is added after the Digitize New Street step.

In this exercise, you configured steps and used the Copy Step and Paste Step functionality. You can proceed to the next exercise, Exercise 9: Saving and associating workflows.
