What is a schematic data source?

Many organizations using networks work with sets of databases. Schematics allows connection to various data sources. Thus, schematics can be generated not only from geodatabases but also from any other data source providing information such as inside plant or logical connectivity.

Schematic data sources may be manually created within Schematic Dataset Editor. They can also be automatically created when using some specific functions like Import From Feature Layers or Import From Feature Classes/Tables. Schematics Components (esriSchematic.olb) can also be used to develop schematic data sources creation and define their parameters. This help book mainly focus on the manual creation of data sources within Schematic Dataset Editor and on the data source management tools that are available in Schematic Dataset Editor to help you manage these data sources.

CURRENTDS data source

When editing a schematic dataset within Schematic Dataset Editor, the CURRENTDS data source is automatically referenced under the Data Sources entry. This data source connects the geodatabase where that schematic dataset and its related schematic components are stored—that is, the schematic diagram classes, schematic feature classes, schematic diagrams, schematic folders, and so on.
