Selecting a specific dimension value

Complexity: Beginner Data Requirement: Use your own data Goal: Learn how to select a specific dimension value.

Using netCDF layer property dialog

You can display a different slice of a netCDF raster layer, feature layer, or table by changing dimension values on the netCDF property dialog box.

Auxiliary coordinate variables are not listed in the Dimension Values parameter drop-down list. If you have a dimension that uses an auxiliary coordinate variable for storing actual values, such as time or depth, they will not be available in the Value drop-down list. If values are typed in, they will not be used during execution.

Steps:
  1. Right-click the netCDF layer or table you want to modify in the table of contents and click Properties.
  2. Click the NetCDF tab.
  3. If a dimension is listed in Dimension Values, click the Value field next to the dimension you want to modify. A drop-down arrow will appear if the number of available values is less than or equal to 200.
Selecting a specific time, level, or other dimension value
  4. Click the drop-down arrow and click a value, or type in a value if a drop-down list does not appear.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for other dimensions if necessary.
  6. Click OK on the Layer Properties dialog box.
  7. Selecting a specific time, level, or other dimension value
Alternatively, you can use the Select by Dimension tool.

Using the Select by Dimension tool

You can also select a different slice of a netCDF raster layer, feature layer, or table by changing dimension values using the Select by Dimension tool.

Steps:
  1. Click the Search window button Search Window or tab.
  2. Click Tools.
  3. Type Select by Dimension in the text box and click Search Search.
  4. Click Select by Dimension in the returned list to open the tool.
  5. Click the Input Layer or Table drop-down arrow and select a netCDF layer or table from the list.
  6. Click the Value Selection Method drop-down arrow and select BY_INDEX if you want to specify a dimension value by its position or index.
  7. Click the Dimension Values drop-down arrow and select a dimension from the list.
  8. Click the value field next to the dimension and select a value from the list, or type in the value if a list does not appear.
  9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 for other dimensions if necessary.
  10. Click OK.
