Adding new GML application schemas
You may need to use GML application schemas other than those that match the set of GML formats that are supported by the Data Interoperability extension. For example, many local organizations provide their content in a specialized GML application schema that has been adopted by the local community.
The mechanism to add this in ArcGIS is to create a custom format for the GML application schema using the Data Interoperability extension for ArcGIS Desktop.
Process for creating a custom GML format
First prepare your system by ensuring the following:
- You have installed and enabled the Data Interoperability extension in ArcGIS Desktop.
- You have a GML file on your system in the format of the custom GML application schema.
Once you have these in place and enabled, perform the following steps:
- In ArcCatalog, add a new interoperability connection by double-clicking Add Interoperability Connection.
- Click the Format ellipsis (...) button to open Formats Gallery.
- Click New to add a custom format. The Create custom format wizard opens to lead you through the process of creating a custom data format for use in ArcGIS.
- When prompted to select the format of your data source, choose GML - Geography Markup Language.
- When prompted to enter a file containing the source data, specify your GML file.
- The supported elements contained in your file are identified, and you are prompted to identify which ones you want to use as well as to give a name and a description of your custom format.
- Complete the steps in the wizard. The FME workbench application and a simple GML convertor are started for your GML data. This environment enables you to add other files (such as an attribute table) and to perform any translation and conversion operations necessary to effectively transform and use your GML data source.
