System requirements to install ArcSDE for SQL Server

ArcSDE has certain minimum computer system requirements. Your computer system must meet these minimum requirements to successfully install and use ArcSDE for SQL Server.

Which operating system (OS) is supported depends on the release of SQL Server and ArcSDE being used. For specifics and the latest information on supported operating system and database release for ArcSDE for SQL Server, see http://resources.arcgis.com/ and navigate to the ArcGIS Server System Requirements.

Disk space

The ArcSDE component installed on the computer system requires approximately 100 to 130 MB of disk space, depending on whether you install the 32- or 64-bit version of the ArcSDE component.

SQL Server Native Client

You must have a version of the SQL Server Native Client that is at least the same release as the SQL Server database installed on your server. If you are using direct connections to connect to the geodatabase from client computers, you must have at least the same release of the SQL Server Native Client as the SQL Server database to which you will connect installed on the client computer.

Starting with ArcGIS 10, the SQL Server Native Client is automatically installed with ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Server, and ArcReader. Installation files for the SQL Server Native Client are included with the ArcGIS Engine installation media, so you can install it if required.

Microsoft SQL Server requirements

Separate from ArcSDE requirements, SQL Server has certain minimum computer system requirements. Your computer system is required to meet these minimum requirements to successfully install and use SQL Server. For the latest in SQL Server database requirements, see Microsoft's SQL Server Tech Center documentation.
