Sharing military features

Sharing military features

After you have built your own set of military features or customized the existing features, you may want to share your work with colleagues or other users in the community. The recommended methods for sharing your military features with others are discussed in this topic: creating layer packages and posting layer packages to ArcGIS.com.

Creating a layer package

You can use a layer package to wrap up the contents of a single layer or group layer. This creates an .lpk file that can be moved to a file server or sent in an email to share your military features (including the geometry, attributes, symbology and layer settings).

Steps:
  1. In the ArcMap table of contents, right-click the layer or group layer you want to share.
  2. Click Create Layer Package.

The Create Layer Package dialog box appears.

  3. In the dialog, click Save package to file.
  4. Optional: A default location for the new .lpk file can be changed by clicking the open folder button next to the file path and browsing to a new folder.
  5. In the Create Layer Package dialog, click Validate.

This step checks the layer's suitabiltiy to be packaged. Problems are listed in a Prepare table at the bottom of the ArcMap window. You must resolve any errors before you can continue. A common error is not typing a layer description in the layer's Layer Properties dialog box's General tab.

  6. In the Create Layer Package dialog, click Share.

The Packaging dialog box appears. When packaging completes, a Succeeded dialog box appears.

  7. Click OK to close the Succeeded dialog box.

Posting to ArcGIS.com

You also have the ability to share a layer package directly to ArcGIS.com. Through ArcGIS.com, you can share your layer packages to the general public or to private groups that you are a member of.

Steps:
  1. In ArcMap table of contents, right-click the layer or group layer you want to post to ArcGIS.com.
  2. Select Create Layer Package.

The Create Layer Package dialog box appears

  3. Click Upload package to my ArcGIS Online account.
  4. Click theValidate button.

This step checks the layer's suitabiltiy to be packaged. Problems are listed in a Prepare table at the bottom of the ArcMap window. You must resolve any errors before you can continue. The most common error is not typing a layer description in the layer's Layer Properties dialog box's General tab.

  5. Click Share.

The ArcGIS Online Sign In dialog box appears.

  6. Type your ArcGIS.com user name and password and click Sign In.

The ArcGIS Online Package Details dialog box appears.

  7. Type a summary for the package.

The optional Description is copied from the Description in the layer properties. Both the Summary and Description are used to describe the layer package on ArcGIS.com. The Summary appears as a short description of the layer when a user does a search. The Description is a more detailed explanation of the package contents and uses.

  8. In the Tags text box, type in one or more comma separated terms or phrases that will help other users find your layer package when they perform searches on ArcGIS.com using those terms as keywords.
  9. Indicate who you want to share your layer package with by selecting an option in the Share your package with area:
    • Everyone (public)allows everyone who logs on to ArcGIS.com to find your package.
    • Members of these groups allows you to choose which groups your package will belong to. Only members of groups you select here will be able to see your package. Only groups you are a member of will be listed here.
  10. Click OK.

The Packaging dialog box appears. When packaging is completed, a Succeeded dialog box appears.

  11. Click OK to close the Succeeded dialog box.
