Using map services
After you have added the Data Appliance map services to your ArcGIS Server, you are ready to use them. Because of the many capabilities it exposes, a map service can be used in a large number of Esri and non-Esri applications. For more information, see Map service usage under Professional Library » ArcGIS Server » Publishing services » Types of services » Map services in Desktop Help 10.0 for ArcGIS.
For information on the available map services, see the directory for each collection:
ArcGIS for Desktop
Both ArcMap and ArcGlobe support adding ArcGIS Server map services as data. Additionally, you can use ArcCatalog to preview and administer a map service.
For more information on using ArcMap, see A quick tour of ArcMap under Professional Library » Mapping and visualization in Desktop Help 10.0 for ArcGIS.
For more information on using ArcGlobe, see The ArcGlobe user interface under Professional Library » Extensions » 3D Analyst » Visualizing data in 3D » Using ArcGlobe in Desktop Help 10.0 for ArcGIS.
From ArcCatalog you can preview the services and drag them into ArcMap and ArcGlobe. For more information on connecting to the Data Appliance services using ArcCatalog, see Connecting to GIS servers under Professional Library » Data Management » Using ArcCatalog » Working with ArcGIS servers in Desktop Help 10.0 for ArcGIS.
ArcGIS Explorer
Map services can be added to both two- and three-dimensional maps in ArcGIS Explorer. For information on how to use map services in ArcGIS Explorer, see GIS services under Adding and working with data sources » Adding data sources in ArcGIS Explorer Help.
