Creating new ENC data

All new ENC cells are created through the NIS workflow by creating an area of interest in the Product Library tree.

As mentioned in the Loading source data section, ArcGIS Desktop supports a wide variety of raster and vector formats. Raster data stored in any of the supported formats can be used as a backdrop for ENC collection. Source data stored in a supported vector format can be directly copied and pasted, while working in an edit session, into the NIS database if working in an enterprise production environment or in the product database if in a desktop production environment.

After loading source data, you can use it to generate the components of an ENC product. The data collection process has been streamlined in ESRI Nautical Solution by offering ways to autogenerate some of these basic components. Currently, you can autogenerate polygon depth areas, land areas, and parent/child hierarchical relationships. You can autogenerate all these features and relationships in the product database if you are in a desktop production environment. If you are in an enterprise production environment, you can autogenerate polygon depth areas, land areas, and parent/child hierarchical relationships in the NIS database.

Before you begin with the batch create process, you need to make sure you perform the following steps:

  1. Load your populated product database into an ArcMap document (MXD).
  2. On the main menu, click Customize > Extensions and verify that all applicable extensions are checked. You need Production Mapping and Nautical Solution.
  3. Organize the MXD so that you have all the toolbars necessary for the compilation effort. To determine necessary toolbars, refer to Quick tour of the Nautical Solution, or use the Nautical S-57 Production toolbar settings available through Customize > Production > Toolbar Settings.
  4. Start an edit session.

Creating polygon depth area features

The Generate Depth Areas geoprocessing tool creates S-57 polygon DEPARE features based on a defined set of parameters, modifies existing depth area features, and removes extraneous DEPARE features. This geoprocessing function requires that you have your depth contours collected so the depth intervals can be used during the processing functions. Before you generate depth areas, you can use the ClosingLinesL feature class to link any gaps that may exist in your depth band coverage. The Generate Depth Areas geoprocessing tool can only be accessed through ArcMap while in an edit session by following these steps:

Schritte:
  1. In ArcMap, click the ArcToolbox Window button ArcToolbox-Fenster.
  2. Expand the Nautical Tools toolbox.
  3. Expand the S-57 toolset.
  4. Double-click the Generate Depth Areas tool to open the geoprocessing dialog box.

Instead of having to collect each depth area feature manually, all the DEPARE features will be auto-generated for you, saving time and effort. Since it is a geoprocessing tool, you have the ability to define which layers in your TOC will be populated as your depth contours, depth areas, and so on. However, by default, the feature class and subtypes that represent the appropriate S-57 features will be auto-populated for you.

Generating land area features

The Generate Land Areas tool automatically generates new S-57 land area features, modifies existing land area features, and deletes extraneous land area features. This tool requires that you define the coastline features, depth contour features, and the metadata features before you begin the process. Similar to the polygon depth area tool, you can choose which features/subtypes stored within the TOC will get auto-populated as S-57 land area features. The Generate Land Areas tool is accessed through ArcMap on the Nautical toolbar and enabled while in an edit session.

Creating parent/child relationships

The Relationship Manager is located on the Nautical toolbar. It creates S-57 relationship features, modifies S-57 relationship features, and removes S-57 relationships between features. In addition to batch creating parent/child relationships, the Relationship Manager also handles S-57 Collection features (C_ASSO and C_AGGR) and individual parent/child relationships as well.

You can perform a batch create on all potential parent/child hierarchical relationship features using the Relationship Manager tool. However, there are a few conditions before you start the batch create process:

Parent/Child hierarchical relationship features will not be created if either of these conditions is not met. Relationship features are created in ArcMap while in an edit session.
