Edit mode and run mode

Like other web parts within SharePoint, the ArcGIS Map Web Part has an edit mode and a run mode. SharePoint users with permissions to edit the page containing the Map Web Part will be able to put the web part in edit mode, while users with read-only permissions will only be able to interact with the web part in run mode.

Edit mode

To put the Map Web Part in edit mode, choose Edit Web Part from the menu in the upper right corner of the web part:

Edit Web Part menu

Edit mode allows you to make changes to the web part's configuration and save them as part of the web part. Configurable portions of the web part include the following:

  • Layers, including order and appearance
  • Basemap
  • Map extent
  • Map rotation
  • Appearance of pop-up windows
  • Fields included in the attribute table
  • Ribbon configuration

To save the web part's configuration, click the OK or Apply button located on the right side of the page.

Run mode

Any users that have read access to the page hosting the Map Web Part can use the web part in run mode. In run mode, users can pan and zoom the map and interact with the layers the map contains. The ribbon controls that are available in run mode are determined by which controls are included in edit mode. While all the ribbon controls are available in edit mode, only the controls included by the designer will be available in run mode.
