When using the ArcGIS Viewer for Flex application builder, users will typically start creating a new web mapping application on this tab. Creating a new application can be based on either a Web Map from ArcGIS.com or from scratch by specifying your own combination of base map and operational layers.

Web Maps

Clicking Web Maps will display the Web Maps dialog option for the Maps tab. On the left side of the dialog, it lists the current featured Web Maps from ArcGIS.com, which can be selected as the data source for the new application. Clicking Select will add a Web Map to the right side of the dialog as the Selected Web Map. A custom spatial extent can be set for the selected Web Map. Alternatively, you can search for a specific Web Map on ArcGIS.com via the input search text box. Search is based on tags associated with a Web Map.

Basemaps and Operational Layers

Clicking Basemaps and Operational Layers will display the Basemaps and Operational Layers dialog option for the Maps tab. The workflow for this dialog has 3 steps:

1. Specify and add basemaps
The Basemap Gallery is populated with 8 popular basemaps from ArcGIS Online. Additionally, basemaps can be added from a custom ArcGIS Server instance or from the Web (only KML layers are supported). Note: the basemaps specified will populate the Map Switcher widget.
2. Specify and add operational layers
Operational layers are typically custom business data for an organization and can be accessed by specifying the REST endpoint URL address for an ArcGIS Server instance. Note: the operational layers specified will populate the Layer list widget.
3. Optionally define a map extent

Properties of both basemaps and operational layers can be specified by clicking the edit button (pencil icon) for the layer.
