Creating and Editing a Tracking Service

Tracking services can either be simple or complex. A complex tracking service uses two message definitions, whereas a simple tracking service uses only one. This procedure outlines the steps for creating or editing a complex tracking service. If you are creating or editing a simple tracking service, some of the steps in this procedure will not be required.

Steps:
  1. From the Start menu, start Tracking Server Manager.
  2. Click the Tracking Services tab.
  3. Click the tracking service whose properties you want to edit.
  4. Click Edit. The Tracking Services Editor dialog box appears.
  5. In the Tracking Service Name field, click and enter a new name for the service. Click on either Simple or Complex to select the Tracking Service Type.

In this example, a complex tracking service will be created. For simple services, some of the steps below are not required.

  6. Click the Message definition for observation drop-down arrow and choose a message definition for the observation portion of the data.
  7. Click the Message definition for object drop-down arrow and choose an object for the data message.

This step is not required for a simple tracking service.

  8. Click the browse button. This will allow you to select a geodatabase table as the source of object data.

This step is not required for a simple tracking service.

  9. Click OK to create the new tracking service (or save the changes you made to an existing tracking service).
    NoteNote:
If you are working with a complex tracking service and both the observation and object message definitions contain a shape column, the Tracking Services message box will open, asking which message definition contains shape information. Typically, the shape column is located in only one message definition and this message box is not required. If you are prompted with this message box, select either Observation or Object, depending on which shape field you want to be used for your tracking data.

The new or modified tracking service appears on the Tracking Services tab.
