Applying Actions to Message Definitions

The Actions tab of Tracking Server Manager allows you to create and apply actions to tracking services as the tracking message server receives data from its source.

Actions are triggered by user-defined queries. This query can be an attribute query, location query, or both. There is also an Always option that allows the action to be triggered for each message.

Creating an Action for a Message Definition

Steps:
  1. From the Start menu, start Tracking Server Manager.
  2. Click the Actions tab. The list of message definitions appears in the panel.
  3. Click the message definition whose actions you want to update and click Manage. The Action Property Page Properties dialog box appears.
  4. Click New Action. The New Action dialog box appears.
  5. Click the type of action to create.

This example uses a Filter action. The Filter action filters out messages based on either attributes or location. Filter actions permit or deny objects meeting the criteria.

  6. Click OK. The Action Parameters dialog box for the type of action selected appears. In this case, the Filter Action Parameters dialog box appears.
  7. Enter the required input for the type of action selected on the Action Parameters dialog box. In this case, select the type of filter to apply.
  8. Click Always, Attribute Query, Location Query, or Attribute AND Location Query to set the type of action trigger.

This example uses a location query.

  9. Click the Source browse button and choose data whose location will interact with the messages in the selected message definition.
  10. Click the Trigger When drop-down arrow and choose a relationship between the source and messages in the chosen message definition, for example, Intersects.
  11. Click OK.

The new action or actions appear in the action list panel. If other actions appear in the list, you can use the up and down buttons to put them in the order you want to apply to the message definition.
