Appendix B: Tracking Server Glossary

data link

Component of Tracking Server that translates data from its source into a format that Tracking Server can understand, so that it can be passed on to various clients. Several data links are provided with Tracking Server, but custom data links can be developed which function as plug-ins to Tracking Server.

data throughput

Number of events displayed in the end client.

data timeliness

Speed with which data travels from its source to Tracking Server and on to the client or clients.

event

Refers to the combination of geographic feature and attribute information that defines something that has happened in time.

message definition

Group of settings defined in Tracking Server Manager to format data messages. You can also create and edit message definitions to include different fields from a particular data source.

message definition ID

Twenty-five-character globally unique identifier (GUID) for the real-time data message coming through Tracking Server.

object message definition

Refers to a message definition that typically contains static (unchanging) attributes for tracked objects, which may include geographic information.

observation message definition

Refers to a message definition that typically contains dynamic (changing) attributes for tracked objects. An observation message definition must include a date/time stamp field, and it may include geographic information.

tracking message server component

The component of Tracking Server that acts as the engine and router of data. It receives incoming data via data links and server connections, processes actions based on location and attributes, logs data to geodatabases for later analysis, and pushes data to various clients via the tracking Web distribution component.

Tracking Server Manager

Stand-alone COM application used to administer Tracking Server. It can be used to set up data links, manage connections, define message definitions, establish error logging criteria, manage tracking services, and apply actions to incoming data.

Tracking Server Web Monitor

Web-based Flex application that allows you to monitor the status of Tracking Server and its tracking services.

Tracking Viewer

Web-based Flex application that allows you to view real-time tracking data published by Tracking Server.

tracking Web distribution component

The component of Tracking Server that consumes the output from the tracking message server component and pushes this data to end user clients.

track lines

Lines that trail behind a tracked entity, showing historical movement. Tracking Viewer and ArcGIS Tracking Analyst allow the display of track lines.
