Exercise 2: Importing a Message Definition

Complexity: Beginner Data Requirement: Installed with software

You can import a message definition using Tracking Server Manager. Tracking Server will then use the message definition to process incoming data messages from input data links. If an incoming data message does not match a message definition, it will not be processed by Tracking Server.

Importing and Editing the Taxi Message Definition

In this procedure, you will import a message definition for real-time taxi data using Tracking Server Manager. Later, the Tracking Simulator will be used to generate data messages that match this message definition.

Steps:
  1. Click the Message Definitions tab in Tracking Server Manager. Initially, the list box containing message definitions is empty. If message definitions have already been created, they will appear in the list box.
  2. Click Import.
  3. Navigate to the Tutorial folder in the location of your Tracking Server installation. Select the taxis.dsd file and click Open.

The default location of the tutorial data is in the <Tracking Server Installation Directory>\Tutorial folder. For example, a typical path would be C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\TrackingServer\Tutorial.

  4. In the next step, you will edit the message definition to ensure its time zone information matches the time zone of your system. The default time zone for new and imported message definitions is Eastern Time.
  5. The Taxis message definition now appears in the list box. Click on it to select it and then click Edit. The Message Definition Editor dialog box appears.
  6. Click the Data Time Zone drop-down arrow and select the time zone of your system for the incoming data.
  7. Click OK to close the dialog box.
