Administering the server and service providers remotely
ArcGIS 10 is the last release of the stand-alone ArcGIS Image Server product. The image service definition (.ISDef) has been replaced by an improved geodatabase data model—the mosaic dataset—which can be published as an image service using the ArcGIS Server Image extension.
You do not need to be on the computer where the Image Server Manager is running to administer the server, its service providers, and published image services.
To add a remote image server to the local computer and administer it, the following must be true:
- The current user on the local computer must have administrator privileges on the remote computer.
- The image server configuration file should be on a shared location accessible by both computers.
- The name or IP address of the local computer must be added to the Server Manager Allow List of the remote computer.
To manage a service provider running on a remote server, you need to connect to the server. This remote server connection will contain the list of service providers that you can then work with. You cannot make a direct connection to a service provider on a different server.
An image service accessing data on a local drive that is not shared may not work on a remote service provider. Ensure that the data being accessed is specified using Universal Naming Convention (UNC) paths and that sufficient read permissions are granted.
When adding a connection to a remote server, any service providers on that server will be displayed along with the published image services.
Check that the following Windows services are turned on and running before starting a server or service provider:
- Remote procedure call (RPC)—To start a server or service provider, the service RPC should be turned on. By default, this service is on in all operating systems.
- Remote registry—To start a server/service provider on a remote machine, the service remote registry should be running on the remote machine. By default, this service is off in Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, and Windows 7.
- Start the Image Server Manager on the local computer.
-
Click File > Add Server.
The Add Server dialog box appears.
-
Type the host name for the remote image server in the Host machine text box.
- The machine's name (the browse name on the network)
- The machine's IP address
-
Type the port number in the Port text box.
The port number is the identity of the port where the connection between the client application and server takes place. The default value of this field is set to 3982.
-
Click OK.
The server is added to the Image Servers list.
