About ArcGIS Image Server clients

You can directly connect to and view an image service created by ArcGIS Image Server using various client applications. Each client application accesses and works with the image services in a similar manner. The applications supported with ArcGIS Image Server clients include

There is also a stand-alone client application, Image Server Viewer, which is installed by default with each of the client applications.

These client applications can be used to view the image data from an image service, control various aspects of the image data, view any associated metadata, access processes used to generate the image data, and save an extract of the image data with metadata.

When you view the image data using one of the client applications, you can work as you would with any raster dataset. For example, in ArcMap, the image data from the image service appears as a layer in the table of contents. It has a spatial reference, and you can overlay other layers, such as vector data, in the data frame. You can explore the image data by panning and zooming using tools provided by the supported client applications. You can modify image service properties, such as the mosaic method, spatial reference system, resampling method, transmission compression, and background color. You can view images in different projections even if the client application is unable to reproject this data.

You can also use the image data in analysis applications supported by your application. However, in some cases, you may have to export the data from the image service to use as input data for analysis. You can save the image data to your disk by exporting it from the image service as TIFF, JPEG, JPEG 2000, or PNG by defining the extents and pixel size. The maximum volume of image data exported is controlled by the administrator of the image service.
