Changing the image service display

ArcGIS Image Server provides you with features to change the display properties of image services. Using these features, you can control the behavior of an image service layer when you use the Effects toolbar to modify the contrast, brightness, and transparency.

There is a feature that allows you to make an image service layer transparent so that you can view the underlying image service layers. This feature prevents blocking of valid data regions of underlying layers by an overlying image service layer that has NoData regions. When you apply the transparency feature, the NoData regions of an overlying layer are made transparent so that the underlying layers are visible. The transparency feature enables you to view multiple image services on the same map without blocking each other's data regions. For this, you need to symbolize the NoData regions in the image service by specifying a background color on the Service Properties tab on the Layer Properties dialog box. Then you need to make the specified background color transparent on the Display tab of the Layer Properties dialog box.

Steps:
  1. Open an image service in ArcGIS.
  2. Right-click the desired image service layer in the table of contents and click Properties.
  3. Click the Display tab.
  4. Optionally, check Show Map Tips.

This option enables you to view the MapTip (consisting of the service name) when the mouse pointer is positioned on a particular point in the image service layer.

  5. Optionally, check Allow interactive display for Effects toolbar.

The Effects toolbar allows you to interactively adjust the brightness or contrast of a layer. This option controls how the layer behaves if you use the Effects toolbar to modify contrast, brightness, or transparency. If you uncheck this option, the layer is updated only when you are finished using the controls on the Effects toolbar.

  6. Optionally, check Make service background color transparent.
  7. Optionally, enter the required values in percentages in the Contrast, Brightness, and Transparency text boxes.

    • Contrast—Specifies the contrast percentage for this layer. The default and neutral contrast is 0 percent. You can type any value between 100 and -100.
    • Brightness—Specifies the brightness percentage to be used for this layer. The default normal brightness is 0 percent. You can type any value between 100 and -100.
    • Transparency—Specifies the transparency percentage for this layer. This enables you to see the underlying layers. Type any value between 0 and 100 percent. Type 0 if you do not want any transparency.
