Adding an image service in ArcMap or ArcGlobe

The ArcGIS Image Server client provides a dialog box that allows you to add one or more image services to the program and display the service. The image service can be on your system or accessed over the network. When you add image services in ArcMap, for example, they are added as layers in the table of contents.

Image services served by ArcGIS Server can be accessed via HTTP protocol. This is facilitated by typing http:// and the name of the ArcGIS Server in the Server Name text box.

You can access a summary of the image service properties from this dialog box. Alternatively, once the image service is added, you can access all the image service properties and make modifications to some of them, such as the transmission compression.

Steps:
  1. Start either ArcMap or ArcGlobe.
  2. Click Customize > Customize Mode.

The Customize dialog box is displayed.

  3. Click the Commands tab.
  4. Choose Image Server in the Categories list.
  5. Drag the Add Image Server Connection command onto a toolbar.
  6. Click Close to close the dialog box.
  7. Click the Add Image Server Connection button Add Image Server Connection.

The Add Image Server Connection dialog box is displayed.

  8. Type the name of a server in the Server Name text box.

If the server was not set up with the default port number, you will need to enter the port number. For example, if the server name is IS1000 and the port number is 3982 (which is the default value), type IS1000:3982.

Image services served with ArcGIS Server can be accessed via HTTP protocol. This is facilitated by typing http:// and the name of the ArcGIS Server in the Server Name text box.

For example, if the server name is TestServer, type http://TestServer in the Server Name text box.

The list that appears includes all services served by the selected image server. Some services are organized in folders, which you need to double-click to view the contents.

  9. Click the image service and click the Select button.

You can double-click an image service to add it to the Selected Services list.

The image service name appears in the Selected Services list. You can select one or more services on one or more servers.

  10. Alternatively, click the Only show services available in the current view's extent check box.

This lets you see the services that are in the same extents.

  11. Click OK to add the image service and close the Add Image Server Connection dialog box.

    The image service is displayed.
