Installation guide introduction
This installation guide includes instructions for installation and setup of ArcSDE for SQL Server. It also contains instructions for upgrading an ArcSDE geodatabase for SQL Server.
There are two ArcSDE installations: one for UNIX or Linux operating systems and one for Windows operating systems. They contain the following:
- The UNIX/Linux installation media contains directories named for each operating system (OS), such as linux, which contain directories named for each supported database management system (DBMS) implementation (for example, pg ).
The Windows media contains directories named for each DBMS. Each ArcSDE<DBMS> directory, such as ArcSDESqlServer , contains the installation files specific to that database. Those directories in both the UNIX/Linux and Windows directories that include "64" in the name, such as ArcSDESqlServer64 , indicate these are installations of 64-bit ArcSDE on that particular DBMS.
- The UNIX/Linux and Windows media also contains a folder named documentation_server. The documentation_server directory contains the administration command references documentation and installation guides. The administration command reference contains syntax and usage for the ArcSDE commands; the installation guides (one of which you are reading now) contain instructions for the installation and setup of ArcSDE.Tip:
None of the documentation is installed with the UNIX/Linux setup program. If you are installing on UNIX or Linux and want the documentation on your machine, you must manually copy it from these folders to disk. The installation guides are not installed on any OS, so if you want these on your computer, you must copy them to disk.
Software development kit
You can request the installation files for the ArcSDE software development kit (SDK). This SDK disk contains an SDK directory, ArcSdeSDK, and a directory named documentation_sdk. The ArcSdeSDK directory contains the installation files for the developer kit. The developer kit has its own separate installation guide, which is also found in the ArcSdeSDK directory. The documentation_sdk directory contains the ArcSDE Developer Help. To obtain this installation, contact ESRI customer service. International customers should contact their local distributor.
Geoprocessing tool topics
This installation guide includes the Upgrade Geodatabase, Upgrade Network, and Upgrade Parcel Fabric geoprocessing tools help topics. These are provided for your convenience so you do not have to go to the ArcGIS Desktop Help to read these. However, be aware that these topics may contain links to topics in the ArcGIS Desktop Help, which may or may not work for you. To see these linked topics, see the ArcGIS Desktop Help.
