Web maps

Web maps provides access to maps available from ArcGIS Online. Once viewed, the web thumbnails appear in Web Maps maps and the web maps layers appear in My Layers for future access. You can access your groups and content from ArcGIS Online under My Groups and My Content.

Steps:
  1. From the More Maps dialog box, click Web Maps. Basemaps, Web Maps and My Web Maps
    NoteNote:

My Web Maps is optional and set up through Portal for ArcGIS. My Web Maps will not appear if you have not created this setting in Preferences.

  2. Click Browse ArcGIS Online and the Browse ArcGIS Online Web Maps dialog box appears.
    Browse ArcGIS Online
    • To find the web map, you can use the Search for web maps from ArcGIS Online text box, sort, select the number of maps to view using the View drop-down menu or scroll through the pages using Previous and Next.
  3. Once you've found the web map you want to use, click Add this map. Hovering over the map also provides more information about the map.
    Add this map
    NoteNote:

If you are having trouble adding an ArcGIS.com Web Map, it may be because it is missing the cross domain policy file that allows Community Analyst to access the data. A cross-domain policy file is an XML document that grants a web client permission to handle data across one or more domains. If the cross domain policy file is missing, you can ask the Server Administrator to add the missing crossdomain.xml file which usually resides at the web server's root directory.

    NoteNote:

Once viewed, the web thumbnails appear in Web Maps maps and the web maps layers appear in My Layers.

This icon indicates the map can be converted to a site. See select a feature on the map for more information on converting to sites.

This map contains layers which can be converted to sites.

    NoteNote:

Some services used to create web maps don't provide information about whether features can be selected. Some web maps don't have this icon while you can still select features and convert to a site.

For web maps that contain variables, the Variables Added dialog box appears to indicate the variables that can be used to create color-coded maps or for use in performing a Smart Map Search. The variables will be available under Web Map Layers in the Choose Variables list and can be used in the Category drop-down menu in Color-Coded Maps and Smart Map Search.

    NoteNote:

For data from web maps to be available in Color-Coded Maps and Smart Map Search, the following conditions must be met:

    1. The data in the web maps must be in a feature service.
    2. The feature service must support the Query operation.
    3. There must be at least one numeric variable in the feature service.

Currently only polygonal areas are supported for mapping. It is not necessary for polygonal features to be contiguous or cover the entire United States.

This web map can be accessed in My Layers and is also available under Web Maps.

Append or replace web maps

If you already have web map layers loaded on the map, you can append or replace them.

  • Append <layer name> to the map - allows you to view the newly loaded web map layer along with the current layer. This can be useful if you are viewing the same area and want to compare multiple web map layers on the map. Append is the default.
  • Replace the current layer with <layer name> - allows you to replace the newly loaded web map layer with the current layer.

Append or replace the ArcGIS Online layer

Click OK.

Select a feature on the map

The Select tool in the map tool palette allows you to select polygons and points on a map. A pop-up provides information and the ability to convert to a site and create a report when applicable. You can also create a bounding box to select multiple polygons on a map.

Steps:
  1. With the web map open, click the Select tool on the map tool palette.
    Select tool
  2. Click on any polygon or point on the map to view the pop-up.
  3. To create a site, click Convert to site. The point appears on the map with a dialog box providing the address and options to add rings, drive time or donuts; move the point; and delete the point. Naming the site is optional. If a site name is not entered, the address is used as the site name by default.

You can create a standard report or a comparison report once you've added a ring, drive time or donut.

Bounding box

With the Select tool, you can select multiple polygons, using the bounding box, to create one site aggregating all the polygons instead of selecting them one-by-one and creating individual sites.

Steps:
  1. With the web map open, click the Select tool on the map tool palette.
    Select tool
  2. Click and drag the pointer over the area where you want to create the bounding box.
  3. Use the pop-up to name your site and click Convert to site to convert the features to a site.
