Select Geographies

Select Geographies allows you to select geographies using Full List, Current Map View, and Search. When working, the Prev and Next buttons guide you through the workflow. The step that you are on appears, and the number of steps is provided along with an indication of what can be done.

You can use the site menu to get reports; edit the site; edit site colors; hide and show labels; and organize, compare, and clear the site.

Full List

The Full List tab provides a list of geographies for the entire state regardless of the current map view.

Steps:
  1. In the Select Geographies pane, click the Full List tab. Full List

  2. To change the geography vintage, click the toggle.

    This allows you to change the geography boundaries. The default vintage is 2000. Click here for more information on geographic differences between 2000 and 2010.
  3. In Available Geographies, click the plus sign to expand the options in the list.

    The available geographies may differ depending on the country you have selected.

  4. Check the check box for the geographies you want to view in the map.

    The checked geographies appear under Selected Geographies in the right column.

  5. Click Apply.

    The map reflects the information you selected.

    The Select Geographies pane indicates the selected geographies and allows you to edit your selections.

  6. To edit, click Edit.

    The Full List tab appears.

  7. Make your changes and click Apply.

    The edits appear on your map.

  8. Click Next in the Select Geographies pane to get reports, save the site, or create a new site.

To get reports

This provides you with reports for the location you have created.

In the Select Geographies pane, click Get Reports.

This activates the Get Reports tab.

To compare sites

This allows you to create on-screen comparisons of your recently created sites.

In the Select Geographies pane, click Compare Sites.

The Compare Sites dialog box appears.

To add another site

This allows you to add another site for comparison or report comparisons.

In the Select Geographies pane, click Add Another Site.

This brings you back to the Select Geographies pane where you can locate another site.

Current Map View

Steps:
  1. Click the Select Location tab and click Select Geographies.

    The Select Geographies pane appears with the Current Map View tab open by default.

  2. To change the geography vintage, click the toggle.

  3. In Available Geographies, click the plus sign to expand the options in the list.
  4. Click the check box for the geographies you want to view in the map.

    The checked geographies appear under Selected Geographies in the right column.

  5. Click Apply.

    The map reflects the information you selected.

    The Select Geographies pane indicates the selected geographies and allows you to edit your selections.

  6. To edit, click Edit.

    The Current Map View tab appears.

  7. Make your changes and click Apply.

    The map appears with your edits.

    Click Next in the Select Geographies pane to get reports, save the site, or create a new site.

Using Refresh List

Refresh List appears in Current Map View and informs you when the list of available geographies has changed. Changes are due to a change in the current map view as a result of zooming or panning the map.

You can edit the Selected Geographies in Current Map View and Entire Country.

Steps:
  1. Click Edit in the Select Geographies pane.

    The corresponding tab opens and Refresh List becomes available.

  2. Click Refresh List.

    NoteNote:

    Refresh List is only active when a change has been made.

  3. Click Apply.

    The map appears with your edits.

    Click Next in the Select Geographies pane to get reports, save the site, or create a new site.

To get reports

This provides you with reports for the location you have created.

In the Select Geographies pane, click Get Reports.

This activates the Get Reports tab.

To save a site

This allows you to save the site you have created. You can select the folder where you want to save the location, change the site name, or create a new folder in which to save the site.

Steps:
  1. In the Find Location pane in step 3 of 3, click Save Site.

  2. For Site name, enter a name for your site.
  3. Save the site.
    • To save in an existing folder, select one from the Save in drop-down menu.
    • To save in a new folder, click the Create New Folder icon Create New Folder

    If you are working with more than one site in a single log-on session, you can choose to save multiple sites in Same Folder and Different Folders.

Saving to the same folder

Steps:
  1. To save multiple sites in the same folder, click the Same Folder radio button.

  2. Check the check box next to each of the sites that you want to save.
  3. Choose a folder in which to save your sites by doing one of the following:
    • Choose an existing folder from the Save in drop-down menu.
    • Create a new folder by clicking the folder with the plus sign and typing a name in the Save in drop-down menu.
    • Move up one folder level to save in the folder above this subfolder by clicking the folder with the red arrow Move up one folder level.

      This becomes enabled when a subfolder is selected in the Save in drop-down list.

  4. Click Save.

Saving to different folders

If you are saving multiple sites, you can save the sites in different folders.

Steps:
  1. To save multiple sites in a different folder, click the Different Folders radio button.

  2. Check the check box next to the sites that you want to save.
  3. Choose a folder in which to save your first set of sites by doing one of the following:
    • Choose an existing folder from the Save in drop-down menu.
    • Create a new folder by clicking the folder with the plus sign and typing a name in the Save in drop-down menu.
    • Move up one folder level to save in the folder above this subfolder by clicking the folder with the red arrow Move up one folder level.

      This becomes enabled when a subfolder is selected in the Save in drop-down list.

  4. Continue this process until you have selected folders for each of the sites.
  5. Click Save.

Search

The Search tab searches for a location entered in the text box. When you enter a location, the search result categories appear and you can select the location. When entering a search location, you can enter the city, county, ZIP Code, block groups, census tracts, and so on. You can also enter part of a name or number for candidate geographies.

Steps:
  1. In the Select Geographies pane, click the Search tab.

  2. Enter the city, county, ZIP Code, block group, census tracts, or partial name or number for candidate geographies in the text box.
  3. You can also change the geography vintage from the default of 2000.

  4. Click Go.

    The search results appear in the left column.

    When you select the check box for any of the search results, they appear under Selected Geographies in the right column.

  5. Click Apply.

    The map appears with the options you selected.

  6. To edit, click Edit.

    The Search tab appears.

  7. Make your changes and click Apply.

    The edits appear on your map.

  8. Click Next in the Select Geographies pane to get reports, save the site, or create a new site.
