Add content to a map

Using the Add Content panel, you can search for content to add to the map, browse the content available on a GIS server, or browse your own content on ArcGIS Online.

You can find out more about the content before you add it to the map. When you pause the pointer over each listed item in the Add Content panel, a details panel appears, giving more information about the content. The same information appears whether you are browsing or searching for content.

To add content to the map

Click the Add link next to an item in the list to add the service to your map. Note that after the service is added, the link name switches to Remove; click the Remove link to remove the service you just added.

For ArcGIS feature services and Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC), Web Map Service (WMS) services, you are prompted to choose which layers from the service to add to the map after you click Add.

Map services can be composed of one or more sublayers. You can choose to add a specific sublayer to the map as features by using Add sublayer as features in the service details panel.

To add a map service sublayer as features

  1. In the Add Content panel, pause the pointer over the map service item and, in the details panel that appears, click Add sublayer as features.

  2. Click the Sublayer drop-down arrow and choose a sublayer from the list to add to the map.
  3. Choose either All Features to add all the features in the sublayer to the new layer in the map or Filtered Features to add only a subset of features to the map.
  4. Click OK to close the dialog box and add the new layer to the map.

    If you choose Filtered Features, the Query Definition dialog box opens, allowing you to specify a logical expression using the attributes of the features; only features meeting these criteria are displayed in the layer.

The new layer appears as a layer based on a feature service, which allows you to alter the appearance of the features in the layer, as well as alter or remove the filter.

To find out more about the content

To find out more about the content without adding it to the map, pause the pointer over the item in the list. This shows the details panel with additional information.

You can find out extensive detail about a service, and also get a list of other services that are published from the same server, by clicking the Service Details link. This opens the service details web page in another browser window.

Click Zoom to to zoom the map to the extent of the content.
