Setting presentation options

Using the Presentation Options dialog box you can set the presentation to advance automatically and configure the display for presentations containing time enabled layers. To set the options for a presentation, click Presentation in the status area to open the Presentation toolbar, then click the Presentation Options button shown on the right of the toolbar to open the Presentation Options dialog box.

Set the presentation to run automatically

You can set the presentation to run unattended continuously by selecting one of the time intervals shown in drop-down list under Auto-advance. When run, the presentation will then advance to the next slide after the chosen time interval, and after showing the last slide, will return and begin again until stopped by either pressing the End button on the Presentation Navigator or by pressing the ESC key on your keyboard.

The option you select is saved with the map and will apply whenever anyone opens the map.

By default, Auto-advance is set to None; this means that when run, the first slide will be shown, and the presentation is controlled manually by using the Presentation Navigator, or the SPACE, PAGE UP, and ESC buttons.

Setting up a presentation to run automatically can be very useful if you want to share your presentation with someone who has never used Explorer Online before.

Configure the display of time-enabled layers

There are two presentation options which are relevant to slides containing one or more visible, time-enabled layers.

The Time Display options within the Presentation Options dialog box

  • When the Use the time extent stored in slides checkbox is checked, each slide stores a particular time extent. This means that each slide can display a different period of time for time-enabled layers. For example, consider a map which contains a visible, time-enabled layer of fire history for the last 100 years. You could create a number of slides, the first slide displays fires before 1980, the second between 1980 and 2000, and the third shows fires since 2000 to the present day. When you run the presentation each slide shows the specified time extents. Conversely if the checkbox is unchecked, time extents are not stored in each slide. In this case when you run the presentation from the beginning, only the fires for the time extent specified on the first slide will be shown, and when you advance to the next slide the fires from the same time extent will still be shown.
  • When the Display the time slider when presenting checkbox is checked, the Time Navigator will be shown when running a presentation if there are any visible, time enabled layers in a particular slide.
