About configuring pop-up windows

The content of a pop-up window is determined by the properties of the feature (its attribute values), combined with the pop-up configuration properties of the layer that the feature belongs to.

The following elements of the pop-up window can be changed for configurable layers:

  1. Title is shown at the top of the pop-up window.
  2. Description is shown under the title.
  3. Inclusion of media elements and captions for the media are shown under the description.
  4. Display of feature attachments is shown under the media elements.

In addition to configuring how the pop-up window is displayed, you can also configure how the attribute field values are displayed and edited.

You can configure pop-up windows for layers based on map or feature services, and those with features imported and stored in the map. You cannot configure how pop-up windows are shown for layers created and stored in the map, for example the default Map Notes layers—however you can edit the title, description, image URL and related link displayed in the pop-up window for each feature . You cannot display pop-up windows for layers based on WMS services.

How to configure pop-up windows for a layer based on a map service

When you add an ArcGIS Online map service to your map, it may already have pop-up windows defined. You can use the pop-up windows defined in the service, or you can change the configuration for your map.

Map services that you add directly from an ArcGIS Server or via a URL do not have pop-up windows by default.

To set the pop-up window configuration for a layer based on a map service, open the Layer Details view of the Layers panel by clicking the arrow at the right of the layer, and click Configure Pop-ups. Buttons to add and configure the pop-up content of each sublayer are shown. Click Add to add pop-up windows to a layer. Click Configure to open the Configure Pop-ups dialog box for the layer.

Configurable feature layers are those containing features that reference a feature service, or those created by importing data.

Updating service configuration

When you add a service from content items in ArcGIS Online to your map, it may have pop-up windows and other appearance properties already configured. You can change the configuration in the map, and you can also reset the configuration to that defined by the service item. If you are the owner of the service, you can also upload the new configuration from the map to your service item.
