Adding a selected feature as the area of interest

There are several properties associated with an area of interest. These properties are divided into two sections: General and AOI. The General section includes properties such as the name, alias, description, and status of the area of interest. The AOI section includes properties such as the map scale, the reference scale for the area of interest, and whether the existence of the AOI has been verified.

When you add an area of interest to an instance, only the General properties are required. You can optionally indicate the AOI type, various scales, and whether the AOI contains data.

Every instance must contain at least one area of interest (AOI). Each AOI represents an area that gets used for extraction.

The steps below are for adding an AOI from a selected feature, but you can also add an AOI from an extent or by using Feature Builder if you don't have an extent.

Steps:
  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. Make sure you have data loaded in your map.
    NoteNote:

Add the feature class to the MXD opened in ArcMap if necessary (for example, M_COVR feature class for ENC).

  3. Select the feature you want to use as the area of interest.
    TipTip:

You will not be able to add an AOI if you select more than one feature.

  4. Open the Product Library window.
  5. Right-click the instance to which you want to add an area of interest and click New AOI (Selected).
    TipTip:

If New AOI (Selected) is disabled, you may have selected more than one feature. If your product has two or more AOIs, you will need to create a New AOI (Selected) for each of them.

The New AOI (Selected) dialog box appears.

General pane on the New AOI (Selected) dialog box
  6. Click the cell next to Name.
  7. Double-click the existing text and type a name for the area of interest in the text box.
    TipTip:

For Name and Alias: Coverage or No Coverage is preferred for S-57 data. Charts should use the panel or chart name.

  8. Click the cell next to Alias.
  9. Type the name you want displayed in the tree view for the area of interest.
  10. Click the cell next to Description.
  11. Type a description of the area of interest in the text box.
  12. Click the cell next to Visible.
  13. Click the drop-down arrow and indicate whether the area of interest is going to be visible to other users in the product library tree view.

    The default value is False.

If you are using the Nautical Solution, choose True.

  14. Click the cell next to AOI Type.
    TipTip:

Steps 14–15 don't apply to the Nautical Solution.

  15. Click the drop-down arrow and choose the AOI type that matches your area of interest.
    TipTip:

Options are dependent on the entry types set at the product class level.

  16. Click the cell next to Compilation Scale.
  17. Double-click the existing text and type the scale at which the feature was originally collected.
    TipTip:

For S-57 cells, enter the compilation scale based on the CSCL value of your cell (the same value you used in the extraction queries). For charts, enter the compilation scale, map, and reference scale equal to that of the scale for the panel that is being produced (this value can be obtained from an existing chart).

  18. If necessary, click the cell next to Map Scale.
  19. Double-click the existing text and type a value for the area of interest's scale in the map display.
  20. If necessary, click the cell next to Reference Scale.
  21. Double-click the existing text and type a value for the area of interest's scale based on the data frame.
  22. Click the cell next to Use Data.
  23. Click the drop-down arrow that appears in the cell and indicate whether the area of interest contains data.

If you are using the Nautical Solution, choose True.

  24. Click the cell next to Verified.
  25. Click the drop-down arrow and indicate whether the area of interest has been verified.

If you are using the Nautical Solution, choose True for S-57 cells with multiple CATCOV = 1 areas, and False for CATCOV = 2.

The default value is False. This property does not need to be set to True if you are only creating the area of interest.

There is no need to set extraction queries on the Extraction pane.

  26. Click OK to close the dialog box.

The area of interest appears in the product library tree view.

TipTip:

You can remove the feature that you used to create the AOI from ArcMap.
