Defining view settings

The View Settings button View Settings allows you to set how your current map's data frame and layer will be affected when a view is applied, when a view is not defined as static. You can choose to either keep or override current map settings for both data frame settings and layer settings. However, changes you make to these settings persist between ArcMap sessions.

Steps:
  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. If necessary, load data in the map.
  3. Switch to layout view.
  4. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Production Symbology.
  5. Click the View Settings button View Settings on the Production Symbology toolbar.

The View Settings dialog box appears.

    View Settings dialog box
  6. Click the drop-down arrow and choose Keep Current Map Settings, Override Current Map Settings, or Append to Current map (or the Layer List only) for each of the following data frame and layer settings:
    • Coordinate System—This option uses the data frame's current coordinate system in place of the coordinate system stored with the selected view setting to display the map. The default is Keep Current Map Settings.
    • Scale—This option uses the data frame's current scale setting in place of the scale setting stored with the selected view setting to display the map. The default is Keep Current Map Settings.
    • Reference Scale—This option uses the data frame's current reference scale in place of the reference scale stored with the selected view setting to display the map. The default is Keep Current Map Settings.
    • Extent—This option uses the data frame's current extent in place of the extent stored in the selected view setting to display the map. The default is Keep Current Map Settings.
    • Label Engine—This option overrides the data frame's current label engine and applies the label engine setting stored with the selected view setting to display the map. The default is Override Current Map Settings.
    • Layer List—This option overrides the data frame's current layer list and applies the layer list stored with the selected view setting to display the map. The Append to current map option allows the list of layers stored in the view to be added to the current list of layers that are already in the active data frame. The default is Override Current Map Settings.
    • Layer Order—This option overrides the data frame's current layer order and applies the layer order stored with the selected view setting to display the map. The default is Override Current Map Settings.
    • Layer Masking—This option overrides the data frame's current layer mask and applies the layer mask stored with the selected view setting to display the map. The default is Override Current Map Settings.
    • Definition Queries—This option uses the layer setting's current definition queries in place of the definition queries stored with the selected view setting to display the map. The default is Keep Current Map Settings.
    • Symbology—This option overrides the layer setting's current symbology set, symbology levels, and labeling and applies the symbology, symbology level, and labeling stored with the selected view setting to display the map. The default is Override Current Map Settings.
    • Data Source—This option uses the layer setting's current data source in place of the data source stored with the selected view setting to display the map. The default is Keep Current Map Settings.
    • Visibility—This option overrides the layer setting's current visibility setting and applies the visibility setting stored with the selected view setting to display the map. The default is Override Current Map Settings.
