Hiding the legend for a layer

In the table of contents, the legend appears below the name of the layer and displays the symbol used to represent each subtype in the map. Using the Hide Selected Layer Type's Legend Information tool, you can choose to show or hide this information based on the selected layer type. Hiding the legend collapses the layer information in the table of contents so the legend information is not visible, which is something you can do if there are several layers loaded in the table of contents.

Steps:
  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. If necessary, load data in the map.
  3. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Production TOC Manager.
  4. Click the drop-down arrow on the Production TOC Manager toolbar and choose a layer group.
    • All Layers—Includes all layers currently in the table of contents, whether or not they are currently visible in the map
    • Point Layers—Only includes the point layers in the table of contents, whether or not they are currently visible in the map
    • Line Layers—Only includes the line layers in the table of contents, whether or not they are currently visible in the map
    • Polygon Layers—Only includes the polygon layers in the table of contents, whether or not they are currently visible in the map
    • Group Layers—Only includes the grouped layers in the table of contents, whether or not they are currently visible in the map
    • Visible Layers—Only includes layers in the table of contents that are currently visible in the map
    • Annotation Layers—Only includes annotation layers in the table of contents, whether or not they are currently visible in the map
  5. Click the Hide Selected Layer Type's Legend Information button Hide Selected Layer Type's Legend Information on the Production TOC Manager toolbar.

The legend information disappears for the layers with the selected layer type.

    NoteNote:

Group layers remain expanded; however, the layers within a group layer hide their legend information. To collapse the group layers, you must click the drop-down arrow on the Production TOC Manager toolbar and choose Group Layers, then click the Hide Selected Layer Type's Legend Information button Hide Selected Layer Type's Legend Information.
