Applying layout rules

Layout rules define positioning properties for surround elements. These properties allow you to specify an element's position in relation to other elements in the layout. You can also control page sizes, orientations, and margin distances.

Layout rules can be stored in an XML file on disk or in a product library. Rules stored in a product library become template instructions. You can apply these instructions to a product during checkout. This enables more dynamic behavior in map products. Apply template instructions by clicking Options on the Check Out dialog box.

Steps:
  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. Open an existing or create a new map document and add data to it.
  3. Switch to layout view.
  4. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Production Cartography.
  5. Click the Layout window button Layout window on the Production Cartography toolbar.

    The Layout window appears.

  6. Click Apply Layout Rules.

The Apply Layout Rules dialog box appears.

  7. Click Open.

The Import Layout Rules dialog box appears.

  8. Browse to the layout rules XML you want to use.
  9. Click Open.

The XML file name is displayed in the Layout Rules section of the Apply Layout Rules dialog box.

  10. Click Apply.

The layout rules are applied to the page layout.

    TipTip:

Click Clear All to remove all applied layout rules.
