Creating features by splitting and intersecting existing features

With this feature creation option, digitizing a sketch line that crosses another polyline in the target layer results in four intersected and split features. The Create and Intersect Features construction tool can be used to create features this way based on the line template you choose.

Steps:
  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. If necessary, load data in the map.
  3. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Production Editing.
  4. Click the Production Start Editing button Production Start Editing on the Production Editing toolbar.
    NoteNote:

    The Manage Features and Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes windows automatically appear when you start an edit session using the Production Start Editing tool.

    TipTip:

    If the Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes window does not appear when you start an edit session, click the Show/Hide Attributes button Show/Hide Attributes on the Manage Features window.

  5. Click the Create tab on the Manage Features window.
  6. Choose the line template you want to use to create the new feature.
  7. Click the Create and Intersect Features tool Create and Intersect Features at the bottom of the Create tab.
  8. Click and drag in the map to draw a line across a preexisting line feature.
  9. Double-click to create the end node and finish the sketch.

Wherever the line intersects other line features in the map, a new line feature is created.
