...using the Edit Sketch Properties window

Vertices can store additional attributes besides x,y locations. For 3D features, this includes z-values, which are used to store information about elevation. These attributes are modified when the feature is a sketch, using the Edit Sketch Properties window. You can open the window by selecting a feature, then clicking the Sketch Properties button on the 3D Editor toolbar.

You can also use the Edit Sketch Properties window to manually populate z-values for digitized vertices. For example, if you have digitized a 3D feature vertex (such as a point feature to be symbolized as an airplane), and its default value is zero, you can manually provide its specific height (z-value) using sketch properties.

Edit Sketch is supported for points, lines, and polygons.

Steps:
  1. Click the Edit Vertices tool Edit Vertex Tool on the 3D Editor toolbar.
  2. Double-click the feature you want to edit.
  3. All the vertices will become visible.
  4. Click Sketch Properties Sketch Properties on the 3D Editor toolbar.
  5. When the Edit Vertices tool or a construction tool is active, you can press the P key as a shortcut to opening the Edit Sketch Properties window.
  6. In the Edit Sketch Properties window, check the boxes for the vertices you want to modify.
  7. You can also use the Edit Vertices tool to click a vertex (or drag around an area to select multiple vertices) in the view to select it. Selected vertices appear as green boxes in the 3D view.
  8. To edit the z-value of the selected vertex, you can use one of two methods. The two options are
    • Click inside the table to highlight the cell for the z-value and type a new value.

Edit the selected vertex by clicking inside the Edit Sketch Properties table.

    • Click the Set Selected Vertices z-value button on the top of the Edit Sketch Properties control bar and type a value in the box that appears. Click OK, and the z-value field is updated.

You can also use the Set Selected Vertices z-value button to type a new z-value when modifying feature attributes.

  9. When you are done, click Finish Sketch Finish Sketch on the Edit Sketch Properties window to finish the edit to the vertex.
TipTip:
  • To customize the vertex color in the display, use the Editing Options dialog box. Expand the 3D Editor menu and click Options. The General tab lists the Edit Sketch Symbology.
  • If you have the Edit Placement tool active and you select a feature, clicking the Edit Vertices Edit Vertices button will also directly open the Edit Sketch Properties window.
  • You cannot access the edit sketch properties of a multipatch geometry because it is not a single editable feature. See Editing 3D multipatch features for more information.
