Adding a mosaic dataset to a map

A mosaic dataset can be stored within a geodatabase or as a file (with the .amd extension).

When you add a mosaic dataset to ArcMap, it will appear in the table of contents as a special group layer with a minimum of three layers: Boundary, Footprint, and Image. Each of these layers have their own layer properties and context menu option that are specific to how you interact with the mosaic dataset.

To learn more about the mosaic dataset layer, see Mosaic dataset layer types.

Steps:
  1. Click the Add Data button Add Data on the Standard toolbar.
  2. Click the Look in drop-down arrow and navigate to the geodatabase or folder that contains the mosaic dataset.
  3. Click the mosaic dataset mosaic dataset icon.
  4. Click Add.
TipTip:

You can also drag and drop a mosaic dataset from the Catalog window to ArcMap or ArcGlobe.
