Clipping the footprint to the boundary of an image service definition

LegacyLegacy:

ArcGIS 10 is the last release of the stand-alone ArcGIS Image Server product. The image service definition (.ISDef) has been replaced by an improved geodatabase data model—the mosaic dataset—which can be published as an image service using the ArcGIS Server Image extension.

There are cases when you need to clip the imagery output from an image service definition to a predefined extent, such as the extent of a project, county, or country boundary. Each raster dataset in an image service definition is clipped to the footprint, which is generally the extent of the image. The boundary is generated from the merged shape of the primary rasters' footprints, which excludes the service overviews.

The boundary can be edited using standard editing tools but does not affect the extent of the imagery being displayed. It is generally easier to edit a single boundary to redefine the extents of the image service definition and clip all the footprints to this extent. The following procedure details how to clip the footprints to the boundary.

Steps:
  1. Right-click the Boundary layer in the table of contents and click Open Attribute Table.
  2. Click the arrow Selection arrow to select the first row in the attributes table.
  3. Close the Attributes of Boundary dialog box.
  4. Open the Editor toolbar.
  5. Click the Editor drop-down menu and click Start Editing.
  6. Click the Target drop-down arrow and click Boundary.
  7. Click the Task drop-down arrow and choose the task you want to perform on the boundary layer, such as Modify Feature.
  8. Use the Sketch tools or Edit tool to modify the Boundary layer.
  9. Click the Footprint layer in the table of contents to have both Boundary and Footprint layers selected.
  10. Click the Editor drop-down menu and click Clip.

The Clip dialog box is displayed.

  11. Click Preserve the area that intersects option in the When clipping features section.
  12. Click OK.

The footprint layer is now clipped to the boundary layer.

  13. When complete, click the Editor drop-down menu and click Stop Editing.
  14. Click Yes to save the edits.
