Upgrading the parcel fabric
This topic applies to ArcEditor and ArcInfo only.
Parcel fabrics can be upgraded to the latest, released version of ArcGIS once the geodatabase has been upgraded.
Parcel fabrics created prior to ArcGIS 10
Parcel fabrics created prior to ArcGIS 10 need to be upgraded to work with the new functionality in ArcGIS 10. Once parcel fabrics are upgraded to ArcGIS 10, the following functionality is available:
- Editing of table attribute fields such as the Accuracy and Category fields.
Parcel fabric table attribute fields are not editable in fabrics that were created prior to ArcGIS 10.
- Creation and maintenance of multipart, donut and island parcels.
To create these parcels a new part connection line category is used. Fabrics created prior to ArcGIS 10 can only support part connection lines once they are upgraded to ArcGIS 10.
- Creation of natural boundaries (known as linestrings in the fabric) and conversion of existing boundaries to natural boundaries.
Natural boundaries are not supported in fabrics created prior to ArcGIS 10.
- Creation of new parcels by splitting multiple, parent parcels with construction lines.
Parcel fabrics created prior to ArcGIS 10 support the creation of new parcels by splitting only a single parent parcel.
- Preserving the joined location of parcels.
If parcels are unjoined and then rejoined, the parcels are placed in their previously joined locations and previous join links are automatically displayed in the join dialog. The previous joined location of unjoined parcels is not retained in fabrics created prior to ArcGIS 10.
- Use of the default <Map> plan if no plans are used in the fabric.
In the parcel fabric, parcels can be grouped by their plans (subdivision, tract and so on). In an ArcGIS 10 fabric, you have the option to use the default <map> plan if you don't want to work with and enter plan data.
- Support of history on parcel lines as well as parcel polygons.
In parcel fabrics created prior to ArcGIS 10, history is only tracked on the parcel polygon. The parcels attribute table stores and maintains the SystemStartDate, SystemEndDate, LegalStartDate and LegalEndDate historic attributes.
Parcel fabrics created in ArcGIS 10 store and maintain the same historic attributes on the parcel lines table.
- Use of a Hide attribute field on parcel lines for the management and removal of duplicate labeling on overlapping lines.
Parcel fabrics created prior to ArcGIS 10 need to be upgraded to use and maintain a Hide field on the parcel lines table.
- Improved performance.
ArcGIS 10 parcel fabrics do not display and store geometries for radial lines. Long radial lines in particular can cause performance to degrade on ArcSDE geodatabases. Radial lines are only displayed when parcels are opened.
