Stopping a database server

Stopping the database server kills all current connections and prevents new connections from being made to it. If users are editing when you stop the database server, their changes could be lost or the data could become corrupted; therefore, be sure there are not any active, valid connections being made to the database server before you stop it.

Only Windows administrators can stop a database server.

Before you can stop or pause a database server, you must disconnect from it.

Steps:
  1. Log in as a Windows administrator user that is also a server administrator, start ArcMap, and open the Catalog window.
  2. Right-click your database server connection in the Catalog tree and click Disconnect.
  3. Right-click the database server again and click Stop.

This shuts down the Microsoft SQL Server Express instance, which disconnects all existing connections and prevents any new connections from being made to the database server.
