Exercise 1: Creating a schematic dataset

The schematic dataset acts as the entry point for your schematic application. It is the core object that holds any schematic component. It resides in a personal, file, or ArcSDE geodatabase and is generally created within ArcCatalog. In this exercise, you will learn how to create a schematic dataset in a new Personal geodatabase.

Steps:
  1. Start ArcCatalog.
  2. Make sure the Schematics extension is enabled:
    1. Click Customize and click Extension.
    2. In the Extensions dialog box that opens, check the Schematics check box if it is not already checked.
    3. Click Close.
  3. Navigate to the C:\ArcGIS\ArcTutor\Schematics folder in the Catalog tree.

    This is the default installation location for the Schematics Tutorials data.

  4. Click this folder in the Catalog tree, then click the File menu.
  5. Point to New and click Personal Geodatabase.
  6. Type TutorialSchematicDB for the newly created geodatabase's name.
  7. Press ENTER.
  8. Right-click the TutorialSchematicDB geodatabase, point to New, then click Schematic Dataset.
  9. Type SchematicBuilderSamples for the newly created schematic dataset's name.
  10. Press ENTER.
