Modifying a composite address locator's settings

After a composite address locator is created, you can modify the settings of the locator. See the Defining the address locator components topic for more information about components and matching options that you can modify in a locator.

Steps:
  1. Right-click the composite address locator you want to modify and click Properties to open the Composite Address Locator Properties dialog box.

    You can also double-click the composite address locator to open the dialog box.

  2. Type a new description in the Description text box if you want to provide more information about the composite locator you created.
  3. To add a participating address locator, click the Add Address Locator button Add Address Locator button and choose a locator from the Choose an Address Locator dialog box.
  4. If you do not want to use certain participating locators in the geocoding process, you can either delete or disable them.
  5. To delete a participating locator, select the locator in the Participating Address Locators list and click the Delete button Delete.
  6. To disable a participating address locator, uncheck the box next to the locator name under the Name column.
  7. When you modify the participating locators, you must make sure that the new participating locator's input fields are mapped to the composite locator's input address fields. The composite locator's input address fields are listed in the Input Address Fields section. If needed, you can add or remove an input address field in this section.

  8. To specify and map the input address fields of a participating locator, follow the substeps below:
    1. Click the participating locator in the Participating Address Locators list.
    2. In the Input Mappings section, click the drop-down arrow of each field and choose a field that is defined in the Input Address Fields section.
  9. The next step describes how to specify selection criteria. See Creating a composite address locator for more information about setting selection criteria.

  10. Follow the substeps below to specify selection criteria:
    1. Choose a participating address locator for which you want to specify selection criteria.
    2. Click the Ellipsis button Ellipsis to open the Specify Locator Selection Criteria dialog box.
    3. Define the selection criteria for the address locator using the available buttons or by entering the information in the text box.
    4. Click OK. Repeat this process for other address locators for which you want to specify selection criteria.
  11. Follow the substeps below to specify the output fields. If an option is disabled, the option does not apply to the selected composite locator.
    1. Check the X and Y Coordinates check box to write x- and y-coordinates of geocoded features to geocoded feature classes. The x- and y-coordinates are derived based on the address locator's spatial reference, not the geocoded feature class.
    2. Check the Standardized address check box to write standardized addresses to geocoded feature classes.

      This option only applies if the participating locator is a pre-ArcGIS 10 locator. The standardized address output is not supported for ArcGIS 10 locators.

    3. Check the Reference data ID check box to write the IDs of the reference data features to which addresses were matched to geocoded feature classes.
    4. Check the Percent along check box to write the percent along the reference feature to which the address was matched.

      For example, if the address is located in the middle of the reference feature, the percent along for the address will be 50.

  12. When a composite locator is created, the spatial reference of the first participating locator is used as the spatial reference of the composite locator. When you geocode a table of addresses, by default, the output feature class is saved with the same spatial reference of the locator.
  13. You have two options to modify the output spatial reference:
    • Click the Calculate from Participating Locators button and select the spatial reference from the list of participating locators.
    • Click the Change button and specify the spatial reference.
  14. Check the Store relative path names check box if you want to specify the paths to the participating address locators as relative paths in the composite locator. The locator stores the full paths if the box is unchecked.

    Storing relative paths in the composite address locator is useful if you want to copy the entire workspace, including the reference feature class, tables, and address locators, to another workspace. Setting the correct path to the participating locator is essential if you want to copy the entire workspace containing all participating address locators for a composite address locator to another workspace.

  15. Click OK to close the Composite Address Locator Properties dialog box.
