Working with marker symbol layers

This topic applies to ArcEditor and ArcInfo only.

Each marker symbol layer must include a marker placement style that determines how representation markers are placed relative to input geometry. The marker placement style component of a marker symbol layer allows a marker symbol layer to be added to any type of input geometry. Each marker placement style has a set of properties that can be modified on a feature-by-feature basis during an edit session, creating overrides to the representation rule.

Marker placement style properties

Marker placement styles are an inherent part of a marker representation symbol layer. There are many marker placement styles available. Each one has a different set of properties to dictate how markers will be placed with respect to the underlying geometry.

How to modify the properties of a marker placement style

  1. Open the Layer Properties dialog box of the layer containing the representation rule with a marker symbol layer and click the Symbology tab.
  2. Choose a representation from under the Representations heading if necessary and click the representation rule that you want to modify.
  3. Choose the marker layer you want to change by clicking its tab Marker symbol layer.
  4. Modify the marker placement style properties as necessary by typing or choosing new values.
TipTip:

To map a marker placement style property to a field in the attribute table, click the Display Field Overrides button Representation property mapped to an explicit field to switch to field mapping view.

How to change a marker placement style
