Previewing an image service

The preview allows you to view the raster datasets in the image service definition as a single mosaicked raster dataset. It lets you check the output of an image service without requiring you to compile and publish the service, and it will reflect any changes you make to the image service definition. The preview of a newly created image service definition lets you decide whether the input processes, output properties, bands, and so on, match the expected results.

You need to build a newly created image service definition before you can preview it. For more information on building, see Building an image service definition. Once an image service definition is built, the preview will appear in the ArcMap table of contents as a layer in the image service definition group layer. The preview of an image service displays a group of rasters.

When you add a previously built image service definition to ArcMap, the Preview layer will be included in the custom group layer. The Preview layer is not loaded if a boundary does not exist.
